The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a forecast alerting residents across the nation’s highland zones to prepare for substantially increased rainfall during the coming seven days. The advisory designates ten counties as primary concern areas requiring heightened weather monitoring through the forecast window.

Among the identified regions are Nairobi, Kiambu, and Murang’a, alongside Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, and Tharaka-Nithi. The concentrated precipitation is expected to be most intense across the eastern plateau and surrounding counties in the capital region.

River Tana Conditions Remain Manageable

The Tana River system, which historically experiences significant overflow events during heavy rainfall periods, will see moderate moisture distribution across its catchment basin over the next week. The meteorological department’s hydrological monitoring team indicates that water levels recorded at the Garissa station are projected to remain below the critical 2.5-meter threshold associated with destructive flooding.

Officials stated that current projections show no elevated flooding risk during the forecast period, offering reassurance to communities situated along the river corridor.

Temperature Variations and Coastal Outlook

Weather patterns will show significant geographic differentiation in temperature conditions. Coastal counties including Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Tana River, and Lamu will experience daytime temperatures consistently surpassing 30 degrees Celsius, mirroring conditions in interior arid zones such as Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa.

Conversely, the central highlands will experience pronounced overnight cooling. Areas including Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Laikipia, and Nairobi are expected to see temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius during night hours.

Maritime conditions along Kenya’s coastline will feature gentle wind patterns and modest wave heights ranging from two to three feet. Afternoon seas will achieve slight roughness, though visibility will remain adequate for marine operations. Overall conditions favor fishing and maritime transport activities during the forecast period.
