You Can Now File KRA Tax Returns via WhatsApp — Here’s How
The Kenya Revenue Authority has launched a WhatsApp-based platform enabling taxpayers to file returns and access various services remotely, eliminating the need for physical office visits.

Commissioner General Humphrey Wattaga announced the digital initiative on Thursday, January 22, stating that the messaging service provides round-the-clock access to 15 different tax-related functions.
Taxpayers can activate the service by saving the official KRA contact number, +254 711099999, to their phone and sending either “Hi” or “Menu” via WhatsApp. The automated system then requests identity verification before presenting available service options.
“You can file returns via WhatsApp and through the web. Just ask a query via our 24-hour WhatsApp chatbot, where we have 15 services that can be served through our WhatsApp platform,” Wattaga explained.
The platform offers services including Personal Identification Number management, tax information queries, Electronic Tax Invoice Management System invoicing, tax return assistance, and digital self-service options. For tax filing, the chatbot provides detailed instructions guiding users through the iTax portal submission process while outlining necessary requirements.
Wattaga indicated that this development forms part of broader technological enhancements at the revenue authority. “We have embarked on the second technological upgrade that will see us enhance utilisation of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics for tax management functions,” he noted.
KRA Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi emphasized that upgrading information technology infrastructure represents a critical step toward improving operational efficiency, increasing revenue collection, and reducing reliance on paper-based procedures.
“KRA remains optimistic about meeting the overall revenue target for the Financial Year 2025/26, which stands at Kshs 2.968 trillion. This target represents a required growth of 15.4 percent over the Kshs 2.572 trillion collected in Financial Year 2024/25,” Muriithi stated.
The WhatsApp service follows the recent introduction of a Unstructured Supplementary Service Data platform accessible by dialing *222#. Launched earlier this month, the USSD system caters to users with basic mobile phones who lack smartphones or reliable internet connectivity.
Available services through the USSD channel include PIN registration, Turnover Tax, Monthly Rental Income, ETIMS functions, payment processing, Tax Compliance Certificates, customs services, and various tax returns.
“One of the most frequent concerns has been around digital access. We know that not every taxpayer has a smartphone, reliable internet, or even the digital expertise needed to use platforms like iTax or eTIMS,” KRA acknowledged in a statement.
The dual-platform approach reflects the authority’s strategy to accommodate Kenya’s diverse technological landscape while working toward its ambitious revenue collection goals.
