“Why Are You Beating My Daughter?” – Sonko Confronts Son-in-Law in Viral Video

Swift Response to Distress Call
Sonko rushed to the residence with security personnel following an urgent call from his daughter. In a video-recorded confrontation that has since gone viral on social media, the former governor directly questioned his son-in-law about the alleged assault.
“Why are you beating my daughter? I pay your rent, school fees for the children, I buy groceries, I even bought you a Range Rover. Why are you doing this?” Sonko is heard asking in the footage.
Pattern of Violence Alleged
The incident appears to be part of a disturbing pattern of repeated violence, according to sources close to the family. Sonko made it clear during the confrontation that this was not an isolated incident, expressing frustration over the ongoing abuse despite the family’s substantial financial support to the couple.
Immediate Action Taken
Following the confrontation, Sonko removed Salma and her children from the home and transported them to safety. He subsequently arranged for a comprehensive medical examination at Nairobi Women’s Hospital to document any injuries sustained during the alleged assault.
Public Awareness Campaign
In an unusual move, the former governor shared footage of the incident on social media platforms. Sonko stated that his decision to go public was intended to promote dialogue about gender-based violence and encourage other victims to speak out and seek help.
“No woman should suffer in silence, regardless of their social status or economic situation,” a source close to Sonko quoted him as saying.
Broader Implications
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media about domestic violence in Kenya, with many praising Sonko for his swift action while others debated the appropriateness of publicizing such a private family matter.
Gender-based violence advocates have used the incident to highlight that domestic abuse affects families across all social and economic classes. They emphasize that financial stability does not prevent or excuse violent behavior.
Support Resources Available
Organizations working against gender-based violence have reminded the public of available support services:
- National GBV Hotline: 1195
- Gender Violence Recovery Centre: 0709 888 000 / 0730 630 000

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether formal charges have been filed in connection with the alleged assault. The matter remains under family resolution as of press time.
