“We Almost Lost Tuju” — Kalonzo Breaks Silence on Overnight Ordeal at Karen Police Station

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju is receiving intensive care at Karen Hospital after his blood sugar plummeted to dangerously low levels while in police custody, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has disclosed.

Kalonzo, appearing before the Kibra Law Court on Tuesday, March 24, told the court that Tuju’s blood sugar dropped to 1.9 — a critically low reading that physicians warn can prove fatal within minutes without immediate intervention.

“At one point, we were even told we might lose Tuju due to the very low sugar levels. We could have lost him within five minutes,” Kalonzo told the court.

Tuju was absent from the proceedings, with his legal team confirming he had been admitted to the ICU after his condition deteriorated while he was held at Karen Police Station the previous evening.

Kalonzo, who appeared in court as Tuju’s counsel, said he personally drove the former CS to the station in good faith to record a statement — only for officers to dramatically arrest him moments after he had held a press conference explaining his whereabouts over the preceding 36 hours. He further alleged that police refused to release Tuju for medical attention despite visible signs of declining health.

The arrest followed widespread public alarm over fears that Tuju had been abducted. However, DCI Director Amin Mohamed moved to counter that narrative at a separate press briefing, stating that investigators had conclusively established that Tuju had remained at his Karen residence throughout the entire period in question — including at times when his phone was switched off.

“A combined operational team of uniformed officers was immediately deployed to secure the residence in a deployment which started late in the night,” Amin said, adding that the response was escalated after the family initially declined to cooperate with authorities.

Tuju’s medical condition and the circumstances of his arrest are expected to remain at the center of proceedings as the matter returns to court.
