Vowing to Die Before Betrayal, Sifuna Evokes Alleged Kware Assassination Plot Against Baba

MOMBASA – ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna delivered a fiery address at the party’s 20th-anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, aligning himself firmly with the Odinga family and issuing a robust defense of the party’s future, declaring he would “rather die” than betray its principles.

In a speech that consistently echoed the themes set forth earlier by Winnie Odinga, Sifuna affirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement would not be sold or divided, directly confronting what he described as internal plots to fragment the party.

“Just like my sister Winnie Odinga had said earlier, ODM will not be sold,” Sifuna stated, adding his powerful voice to the narrative that the party is under threat from within. He revealed that “there were plans by other ODM members to divide the party,” but offered no quarter to such schemes.

The Secretary-General, who humorously noted the audience’s excitement by saying, “Ndio naanza washaanza kutetemeka. Waambie watulie” (Now that I’ve started, they are beginning to tremble. Tell them to calm down), positioned himself as a steadfast disciple of the late Raila Odinga. He recalled being elected to his powerful position at the age of 35, framing his leadership as part of the party’s youthful and reformist wing.

In a pointed critique of the growing number of claims about Raila Odinga’s private wishes, Sifuna addressed the political maneuvering head-on. “Everyone has been saying what Raila told them before he died. Everyone had their own last conversations,” he noted. To cut through the conflicting accounts, he proposed a simple solution: “They should follow what Baba said in public.”

Sifuna’s defiance extended beyond internal party politics to the national stage. In a moment that drew a clear line in the sand, he declared, “I would rather die than side with a regime that suppresses its citizens,” a statement met with roaring applause from the supporters.

Dismissing narratives that ODM lacks a viable presidential candidate, Sifuna boldly proclaimed, “There are more than enough candidates.” He added, “I see many presidents in ODM,” urging the party to stand firm in its identity.

The coordinated messages from Winnie Odinga, Sifuna, and other allies like Babu Owino signal a unified front is coalescing within ODM, aimed at consolidating the party’s base and fiercely protecting the legacy of its late leader against both internal and external pressures.
