Tanzanian Superstar Diamond Platnumz Reportedly Flees to Mombasa Following Threats
In a striking display of public discontent, several of Tanzania’s most prominent artists and entertainers are facing severe backlash from citizens after openly supporting the ruling CCM party and President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the recent electoral period.
The wave of anger has particularly targeted global superstar Diamond Platnumz, who is reportedly seeking refuge outside the country amid threats from furious Tanzanians.

The controversy stems from artists’ public endorsements of the ruling party during a highly contentious political climate. Despite Diamond Platnumz’s attempt to mitigate the damage by deleting social media posts showing his support for President Samia, the public’s reaction has been swift and unrelenting. The situation worsened due to previous controversial remarks where the artist had criticized Tanzanians as “lazy,” comments that have now resurfaced to fuel the current fire.
Sources close to the artist confirm that Diamond has temporarily relocated to Mombasa, Kenya, following numerous threats. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages from Tanzanian citizens calling on Kenyans to “send him back” so they can properly “greet” him—a term widely understood as confronting him over his political stance and previous insults.
The backlash extends beyond Diamond Platnumz. Other celebrities who voiced support for the government, including Shilole and Bilnass, have seen their businesses vandalized by angry mobs. Reports indicate that several establishments owned by these artists have been targeted, with significant property damage recorded in Dar es Salaam and Arusha.
“This is a warning to all celebrities who think they can insult ordinary Tanzanians and then expect our support,” stated a social media user in a widely shared video. “We made them famous, and we can unmake them if they betray the people.”
Political analysts suggest the artists’ predicament highlights the increasingly volatile relationship between public figures and their audience in Tanzania’s charged political environment. “Celebrities are learning that political endorsements can carry heavy costs,” commented Dr. Anna Mwampamba, a sociologist at the University of Dar es Salaam. “The public feels betrayed by artists they supported for years, particularly when these celebrities appear to side with the establishment against popular sentiment.”
The Tanzanian entertainment industry has ground to a near halt as many artists have canceled public appearances and concerts indefinitely. Security has been heightened around properties owned by high-profile celebrities who supported the ruling party.
Neither Diamond Platnumz’s management team nor government officials have issued official statements regarding the situation. However, the ongoing crisis signals a significant cultural moment in Tanzania, where the line between entertainment and politics has become dangerously blurred, with careers and businesses now hanging in the balance.
