John Heche, deputy leader of Tanzania’s main opposition party CHADEMA, remains missing three days after his arrest on Wednesday, prompting growing concern from his family and human rights observers.

Heche was detained while attempting to attend a treason hearing for CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu, who was arrested by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government on treason charges. The circumstances surrounding both arrests have drawn international attention as Tanzania approaches its scheduled elections.

The deputy leader’s detention came after he was prevented from attending the burial of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga. His current whereabouts remain unknown, according to party officials and family members.
The arrests extend beyond the party’s senior leadership. Multiple CHADEMA officials have been taken into custody, including members of BAVICHA (Baraza la Vijana CHADEMA), the party’s youth wing. Their locations also remain undisclosed, raising concerns among opposition supporters and civil society groups.
Heche’s family has issued public appeals to the government, pleading for his release and information about his condition and location.
In response to the arrests, the Tanzanian government has defended its actions, stating it will continue to protect its citizens and take measures against what it describes as opposition-instigated unrest. Government officials maintain that the detentions are part of lawful security operations.
The developments come at a sensitive time as Tanzania prepares for upcoming elections, with opposition parties alleging increased pressure on their operations and leadership.
