Six Dead as Tahmeed Bus Collides with Shuttle, Lorry on Mombasa Road
At least six people are feared dead following a multi-vehicle accident on Mombasa Road in the Konza City area of Machakos County late Thursday night, authorities have confirmed.

The collision, which occurred around 11 p.m., involved three vehicles: a shuttle traveling to Loitoktok, a lorry, and a Tahmeed bus en route from Mombasa. According to preliminary reports, all fatalities were passengers on the Loitoktok-bound shuttle.
Multiple passengers sustained serious injuries in the crash, with some trapped inside the mangled wreckage and others left on the ground awaiting rescue. Witnesses described the scene as severe, noting that all three vehicles suffered extensive damage from the impact.
The incident has sparked criticism of emergency response times, with motorists and bystanders at the scene expressing frustration over what they characterized as delayed ambulance dispatch by the Machakos County Government. Eyewitnesses urgently appealed for medical assistance, emphasizing that rapid response was critical to saving lives, particularly for those trapped in the vehicles.
Emergency personnel, including police officers, subsequently arrived and coordinated rescue operations. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, though the exact number of those hospitalized remains unconfirmed.
Traffic along the busy highway was temporarily disrupted as rescue efforts continued.
Mukaa Sub-County Police Commander Hussein Abduba confirmed that investigators have been deployed to determine the cause of the accident and how the three vehicles collided on the Konza City stretch.
Separate Incident on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
In an unrelated incident, a Janam Bus was involved in an accident at Miesenyi area in Voi along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. The bus, traveling from Busia through Nairobi to Mombasa, overturned, leaving several passengers injured.
The number of casualties had not been established at the time of publication. Images from the scene showed the bus lying on its side as bystanders assisted passengers who had exited the vehicle.
Both accidents highlight ongoing concerns about road safety on Kenya’s major highways.
