Raila Junior Shaved in Ceremony to Succeed Father as Family Patriarch
In a ceremony steeped in Luo tradition, Mr. Raila Odinga Junior was on Thursday formally elevated to the position of family head, succeeding his late father, the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The significant rite of passage, known as Liedo, was conducted at the Odinga family farm in Bondo, Siaya County, marking a pivotal moment of transition and continuity for one of Kenya’s most prominent political families.

The solemn event, which drew a gathering of family, friends, and political allies, occurred just three days after the burial of the veteran opposition leader, adhering to the community’s customs for the transfer of patriarchal authority.
Preparations for the ritual commenced at dawn, centering on the symbolic act of shaving the head of the new family head. This act is a profound cultural cornerstone, representing the formal passing of responsibility, blessings, and authority from the departed to his successor.
While the Luo tradition typically designates the first-born son as the heir, the mantle fell upon Raila Odinga Junior as the sole surviving son of the former Prime Minister. The Liedo ceremony thus confirmed his role in leading the family forward.
The atmosphere was filled with the rhythm of traditional Luo music and dances. Performers sang songs laden with cultural significance, urging the newly ascended leader to embrace his role with wisdom and to guide the Odinga family toward unity and future prosperity.
A notable deviation from the customary practice was observed. Dr. Oburu Odinga, the elder brother of the late Raila Odinga, clarified that while it is typical for all immediate family members to participate in the shaving ritual, Raila Junior’s wife was exempted from this particular tradition.
The ceremony attracted a host of notable figures, underscoring the family’s national stature. Among the attendees were business leader SK Macharia, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The installation of Raila Odinga Junior as the family head concludes the official mourning period and signals the beginning of a new chapter for the Odinga family, as it navigates its future under its new leader, guided by the deep-rooted traditions of the Luo community.
