Pastor Kanyari Announces 150-Hour Tree-Hugging Marathon in Support of President Ruto’s Tutam
Kenyan preacher Victor Kanyari has announced plans to undertake a 150-hour tree-hugging session in what he describes as an effort to rally public support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election campaign.

The controversial pastor revealed his intentions through his official Facebook page, stating his commitment to the marathon session aimed at encouraging Kenyans to back the President’s political agenda, commonly referred to as ‘Tutam’.
“Nashika mti kuanzia kesho for 150 hours hadi mpende President William Ruto… #TutamIsReal,” the post on Kanyari’s Facebook page read.
The announcement has generated considerable online reaction, with thousands of social media users responding to the declaration. Public response has been predominantly critical, with many questioning both the purpose and sincerity of the initiative.
Mixed Public Reception
Social media commentary reflected widespread skepticism about the pastor’s motives. Wilkister Eng’urat dismissed the planned activity, commenting, “As if we care, you can as well convert to a tree.” Another user identified as Vehicle-autodiagnostic responded, “Kojoa tu uachilie. We’re not boarding.”

Several commentators referenced the timeline of Kenya’s electoral cycle. David Kariuki addressed the pastor directly, stating, “Hug it until 2027, and you will still not move us.” Isaac Ongeri questioned the chosen duration, asking, “Why not 310 hours?”
Questions Over Spiritual Focus
Numerous responses expressed concern that the religious leader appeared to be prioritizing political advocacy over spiritual ministry. Chris Oswoma observed, “Nabii anaongea kupenda Ruto badala ya kupenda Yesu. Umechanganyikiwa.”
Bryan Karonya echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Huyu amechanganyikiwa instead ya ku serve God unaanza mambo ya dunia ya siasa tena? Shame on you.”
Some commentators speculated about financial motivations behind the announcement. Shyrra Mbugua suggested, “He doesn’t love Ruto, he’s crafting a way of getting money from him lol.”
George Egh offered another perspective, writing, “Huyu amesikia fake prophets wanachunguzwa akaanza kusupport Ruto,” implying the pastor might be seeking political protection.
Part of Emerging Trend
The tree-hugging format has gained visibility in Kenya following environmental activist Truphena Muthoni’s completion of a similar endurance challenge focused on environmental conservation. Her widely publicized effort appears to have inspired various individuals to adopt the format for different causes.
Despite overwhelming criticism, Kanyari received limited support from some social media users. Shiku Murungi posted, “Tutam Confirmed,” while Siveta Raha encouraged the pastor, saying, “Prophet Kanyari shika mti kabisa ata mimi nasema TUTAM.”
However, negative responses dominated the online conversation. Julius Kamau summarized widespread sentiment, stating, “Get hold of crocodile… the rest of your life who cares.”
The pastor has not provided further details regarding the specific location or timing of the planned tree-hugging session.
