In a declaration posted on his social media platforms on Tuesday, the musician-turned-politician urged Kibra residents to register as voters, positioning himself as a community-driven leader who will prioritize the needs of marginalized communities.
“Registration is Power”
“TUCHUKUENI KURA BANA JO [Let’s take the votes, folks]. Real change starts with us. Registration isn’t just paperwork, it’s power. It’s how communities that have been overlooked finally speak for themselves and shape the future they deserve,” Octopizzo wrote in his announcement.
The artist, whose real name is Henry Ohanga and who hails from Kibra, has been a prominent voice for the constituency’s predominantly low-income population.
Campaign Platform
Octopizzo outlined his political philosophy, emphasizing his commitment to representing the interests of Kibra’s marginalized residents.
“I stand on a foundation of poverty-conscious leadership and integrity-driven service, because dignity, opportunity, and honest leadership should never be luxuries for the few!” he declared.
The prospective MP candidate stressed that his campaign would be built on understanding the lived experiences of Kibra residents, having grown up in the informal settlement himself.
Call for Voter Registration
Central to Octopizzo’s message was an urgent appeal for residents to register as voters, framing participation in the electoral process as essential to community empowerment.
“Your vote is your voice. Register. Show up. Participate. For those who believe in community-driven leadership and real solutions, the time for theory is over,” he stated.
The artist emphasized that Kibra deserves “representation built on integrity and impact,” signaling his intention to challenge the existing political order in the constituency.
From Music to Politics
Octopizzo’s entry into the Kibra parliamentary race marks a significant transition from entertainment to elective politics. The musician has built considerable social capital in the constituency through years of philanthropic work, including initiatives focused on youth empowerment, education, and poverty alleviation.
His grassroots credibility and strong connection with Kibra’s youth population could make him a formidable candidate in what is expected to be a hotly contested race.
Political Landscape
Kibra has historically been one of Nairobi’s most politically competitive constituencies, with intense battles among various political parties and personalities. The constituency, which includes some of Africa’s largest informal settlements, faces challenges including poverty, inadequate housing, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic services.
Octopizzo’s candidacy is likely to reshape the political dynamics in Kibra, particularly among young voters who have long admired his music and community work.
