Mombasa’s Mjambere Hospital Hits 85% Completion, Set to Transform Local Healthcare Access
By Feddy Madebe
MOMBASA—In a significant stride toward improving healthcare delivery, the Mjambere Level 3 Hospital in Kisauni is now 85% complete, the County Government of Mombasa has announced. The project stands as a central pillar in Governor Abdulswamad Nassir’s administration’s commitment to decentralizing quality medical services and bringing them closer to residents.

Once operational, the facility is expected to dramatically ease the chronic congestion at referral hospitals, slash travel time and costs for patients in Kisauni Sub-County, and ensure residents can access essential services with dignity and efficiency within their own community. The hospital will offer outpatient and inpatient services, maternity care, laboratory services, and pharmacy, among other key departments.

For residents like Alex Masha from Junda, the project cannot come soon enough. “A big population of us from Kisauni, more so Junda and Mjambere, used to go to Kongowea Health Centre for medication. This facility right here in Mjambere will reduce that burden and make services available at our doorstep,” Masha stated, echoing a common sentiment in the area.
The hospital’s impact extends beyond convenience. County health officials highlight that it represents a landmark development—the first health facility of its scale to be built in Mjambere Ward since independence. By decongesting existing facilities like Kongowea, it is designed to improve service quality across the board, allowing for shorter waiting times and more focused patient care.

Governor Nassir’s administration frames the project as a direct investment in people-centered infrastructure. “This is how we build a healthier Mombasa,” a statement from the Governor’s office read, “by investing in infrastructure that delivers real impact where it matters most.”
Public health experts within the county have also pointed to the facility’s strategic importance in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC). By establishing a robust primary healthcare network that can handle a wider range of medical issues locally, the county moves closer to ensuring all residents have access to the essential health services they need without suffering financial hardship.

With construction on the final phase underway, the County Government anticipates commissioning the Mjambere Level 3 Hospital in the coming months, marking a transformative chapter for healthcare access in the region.
