Mombasa Police Release VOCAL Africa Activist Sketty Walid After Public Pressure
Saturday, January 10, 2026
Human rights defender Sketty Walid regained his freedom late Friday night after intervention by the commanding officer at Mombasa’s Central Police Station, ending hours of detention that drew sharp criticism from civil society organizations.

The VOCAL Africa staff member’s release followed mounting public outcry and pressure from human rights advocates who condemned his arrest as an attack on those who defend civil liberties.
Arrest Follows Station Visit
The detention occurred after Walid responded to community complaints regarding mass arrests of young people on Mombasa streets. Citizens had reported that police were holding youth in custody without recording their details in the station’s Occurrence Book, a legal requirement designed to prevent unlawful detention.
According to VOCAL Africa, Walid visited Central Police Station seeking information about these reported detentions in his capacity as a human rights advocate. The organization stated that officers physically assaulted him before placing him under arrest during this inquiry.
Rights Groups Condemn Detention
VOCAL Africa issued a statement Friday evening describing the incident as alarming and indicative of persistent problems with law enforcement treatment of human rights workers. The organization characterized Walid’s actions as consistent with his professional responsibilities and demanded authorities release him without conditions.
The arrest generated significant online response, with activists and concerned citizens demanding his freedom while calling on police to follow proper legal protocols.
OCS Facilitates Release
Hussein Khalid, who heads VOCAL Africa as chief executive, announced Walid’s release and expressed appreciation for those who advocated on his behalf.
In a statement posted online, Khalid acknowledged that the station commander’s involvement proved instrumental in securing Walid’s freedom later that evening. He thanked community members, partner organizations, and supporters who maintained pressure throughout the situation.
Broader Pattern of Concern
While civil society groups welcomed Walid’s release, they emphasized that the circumstances surrounding his detention remain troubling. Advocacy organizations assert that this episode represents part of a wider trend where activists questioning alleged security force misconduct face harassment and intimidation.
The incident has renewed discussions about police accountability and the protection of human rights defenders operating in Kenya’s coastal region. Rights groups continue to monitor the situation and call for reforms to prevent similar occurrences.
