Mombasa Hosts Borana Cultural Night in Celebration of Unity and Heritage

MOMBASA – Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Nassir joined his Marsabit counterpart, Governor Mohamud Ali, and members of the Borana community in a vibrant celebration of culture and unity at the Borana Cultural Night held at Mbaraki on Saturday evening.

The event, which brought together hundreds of attendees, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Borana people through traditional music, dance, and artistic performances that captivated the coastal city audience.

Speaking at the occasion, Governor Nassir emphasized Mombasa’s role as a melting pot of Kenya’s diverse cultures, where different communities come together to celebrate their unique identities while contributing to the county’s rich cultural tapestry.

“Mombasa is proud to be a city where Kenya’s diverse cultures converge, thrive, and enrich our shared identity,” Governor Nassir stated. “Nights like these remind us of the beauty of unity, heritage, and the power of community in strengthening the social fabric of our county.”

The Mombasa County chief expressed gratitude to the organizers and the entire Borana fraternity for choosing the coastal city as the venue for their cultural celebration, reassuring them of their welcome in the county.

“Asanteni sana to the organisers and the entire Borana fraternity for bringing this colourful celebration to our city. Mombasa remains your home,” he added.

Governor Mohamud Ali of Marsabit County, who was the chief guest at the event, lauded the Borana community for maintaining their cultural practices and traditions despite the challenges of modernization. He noted that such cultural events play a crucial role in passing down traditions to younger generations and fostering inter-community understanding.

The Borana Cultural Night featured traditional performances including folk songs, dances, and displays of traditional attire that highlighted the community’s pastoral heritage and rich customs. The event also provided an opportunity for cultural exchange, with attendees from various communities learning about Borana traditions, language, and way of life.

The Borana people, primarily found in Marsabit, Isiolo, and parts of northern Kenya, are known for their unique democratic system of governance called the Gada system, as well as their rich oral traditions and cultural practices centered around pastoralism.

Community leaders present at the event expressed appreciation for the warm reception they received in Mombasa, noting that such cultural exchanges strengthen national cohesion and promote understanding among Kenya’s diverse ethnic groups.

The celebration at Mbaraki is part of a broader trend of cultural festivals being held across Kenya, where different communities showcase their heritage while promoting messages of unity and peaceful coexistence.
