The ceremony, held at a central venue in Mombasa, served as a unifying moment for the Christian community as the county prepares to mark the festive season.
Archbishop Delivers Message on Family Values
Catholic Archbishop Martin Kivuva delivered the evening’s keynote sermon, focusing on the critical role of the family unit in building strong communities. The religious leader emphasized that families serve as the cornerstone of society, particularly in cultivating principles of compassion, responsibility, and care during the Christmas period.

Archbishop Kivuva’s message resonated with attendees as he connected traditional family values with the broader themes of the season.
Governor Reflects on Compassion and Service
In his address to the gathering, Governor Nassir drew upon the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan to underscore the importance of extending help to those in need. The governor characterized the story as a lasting lesson in measuring one’s humanity through responsive action during difficult times.
“This parable challenges us to transcend barriers of difference, personal convenience, and social standing,” Nassir told the assembled crowd. “It invites us to embrace compassion and solidarity as fundamental principles guiding our daily interactions.”

County Leadership in Attendance
The ceremony brought together senior county officials, including Deputy Governor Francis Thoya, who joined the governor on the platform. Also present were members of the County Executive Committee and Chief County Officers, alongside the Christmas Tree Committee headed by Father Dr. Richard Airo.
Religious leaders from various denominations participated in the interfaith gathering, which has become a fixture on Mombasa’s annual calendar of events.
Commitment to Inclusive Celebrations
As the ceremonial lighting illuminated the decorated tree, county leadership pledged to ensure inclusive festivities across Mombasa. Governor Nassir reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during the holiday season.

The governor emphasized that the ceremony represented more than a symbolic gesture, describing it as a recommitment to core values of neighborliness and collective care within the community.
The annual tree lighting tradition marks the official beginning of Christmas celebrations in Mombasa County, bringing together residents from diverse backgrounds in a shared expression of seasonal goodwill.
Local organizers reported strong turnout from faith communities throughout the county, reflecting the event’s growing significance as a unifying occasion for Mombasa’s Christian population during the holiday period.
