Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Outlines ODM Priorities Ahead of By-Elections

MOMBASA, Kenya — The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is intensifying efforts to secure victories in upcoming by-elections while maintaining its commitment to implementing a Ten-Point Memorandum of Understanding with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has said.

Writing on his official social media page, the ODM deputy party leader outlined the party’s immediate priorities and long-term vision as it navigates its current political position.

By-Election Strategy

Governor Nassir affirmed that ODM’s immediate focus is on delivering victories in the by-elections scheduled for Kasipul, Ugunja, and Magarini constituencies.

“We are focused on delivering victory in the by-elections of Kasipul, Ugunja, and Magarini, standing firmly with our candidates and our supporters on the ground,” Nassir stated.

The governor emphasized the party’s commitment to supporting its candidates and grassroots mobilization efforts in the three constituencies.

Honoring Raila Odinga’s Legacy

As the party prepares for ODM@20 celebrations marking two decades since its formation, Nassir paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing the event as both a celebration of the party’s journey and a tribute to its departed leader.

“His legacy lights the path we now walk,” the governor said, referencing Odinga’s life of “purpose, courage, and sacrifice.”

Ten-Point MoU Implementation

Looking ahead, Governor Nassir outlined ODM’s commitment to the full implementation of its Ten-Point Memorandum of Understanding with UDA, with particular emphasis on several key areas:

• Promoting inclusivity in governance and national development
• Protecting and strengthening devolution
• Addressing Kenya’s debt crisis
• Securing the future of Kenya’s youth
• Promoting integrity in national leadership
• Eliminating wastage of public resources
• Winning the war against corruption
• Safeguarding the right to peaceful assembly
• Upholding the rule of law and constitutionalism

Commitment to Kenyans

Governor Nassir emphasized that the party’s work is driven by duty to both its departed leader and the Kenyan people.

“We owe it to Baba, to our members, and to every Kenyan who dreams of justice, dignity, and shared prosperity,” he said, using the affectionate term commonly used to refer to Raila Odinga.

The governor concluded his message with a rallying call for unity and determination: “The work continues, and we will walk it with clarity, unity, and unwavering resolve.”

Internal Party Dynamics

The governor’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions within ODM about the party’s future direction and its relationship with the government. While some party members, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, have expressed concerns about the party’s positioning ahead of 2027, Governor Nassir’s message signals a clear commitment to the current political arrangement and the implementation of agreed-upon reforms.

The ODM leadership continues to navigate the delicate balance between maintaining its distinct party identity and fulfilling its obligations within the broad-based government framework.
