Speaking at an ODM function hosted by Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir on Saturday, the MP addressed party faithful gathered to welcome ODM party leader Oburu Odinga to the Mombasa ODM fraternity in what marked his first visit to the coastal city in his leadership capacity.

Taking the podium just before the party leader’s address, Mama Zam Zam, as she is popularly known, began by greeting ODM members before offering her condolences to Oburu Odinga following the death of former party leader Raila Odinga.

“I congratulate and give my condolences to Oburu Odinga over the passing of Raila,” she said, before making an impassioned plea for party solidarity. “I urge the ODM party to stay together,” the legislator emphasized.

However, it was her comments on the deteriorating situation in Tanzania that drew particular attention. The MP highlighted the gravity of recent events in the neighboring country, where reports of political violence and abductions have raised regional alarm.

She spoke about the seriousness of what is happening in Tanzania,” addressing concerns that have dominated East African political discourse in recent days. The MP then counseled party members to adopt a measured approach when discussing Tanzania’s internal affairs.

She asked everyone to take caution while talking about the violence and elections back in Tanzania, suggesting that careful diplomacy should guide public statements on the matter.

In a striking departure from widespread criticism of the Tanzanian government, the Mombasa MP expressed personal support for President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has faced mounting international pressure over her administration’s handling of political dissent.

While everyone seems to be against Samia Suluhu, Mama Zam Zam said she loved Mama Suluhu Hassan and wishes her the best and that her country will be well, offering a conciliatory perspective amid rising regional tensions.

The MP’s remarks come against the backdrop of reported abductions and disappearances in Tanzania, including cases linked to individuals attempting to participate in memorial activities for the late Raila Odinga. The situation has strained diplomatic relations between the two East African nations and raised concerns about cross-border political interference.

The Mombasa gathering forms part of ODM’s broader strategy to consolidate its coastal support base while navigating complex party transitions and sensitive regional political developments that could have implications for Kenya’s foreign policy.

Party leaders at the meeting emphasized the need for ODM to maintain its identity and strengthen its structures ahead of the 2027 general elections, even as it participates in the current broad-based government arrangement.
