The news was first shared by her former partner, Pastor Victor Kanyari, with whom she shared two children. In a somber social media post, Kanyari wrote, “R.I.P Mama Sky. The mother to my kids,” indicating he was en route to Kenyatta National Hospital where Bayo had been receiving treatment.
Tributes have poured in from across the nation, painting a picture of a woman who was both a talented artist and a cherished friend. Renowned Bishop Benson Gathungu Kamau provided context to her recent struggle, revealing that Bayo had been diagnosed with an advanced stage of Leukemia.
“She leaves behind a legacy of a great contribution to the growth of the Gospel Music industry, friendship, and a soul that maximised its full potential,” Bishop Gathungu stated in his eulogy. “She has rested after serving… Rest in Peace, Betty Bayo. Cancer will also die one day.”
The suddenness of her passing has left many in shock, underscoring the private nature of her health battle. Inooro TV News Anchor Wakarura Wa Nyutu shared a poignant memory of visiting the singer just a week before her death.
“Last Monday I was at your place. We stayed until almost midnight; we laughed, we talked, and I truly hoped you would be well,” Wa Nyutu shared online. “And now you’re no more.”
Betty Bayo’s career was a testament to her dedication to gospel ministry through music. She rose to prominence with hits that became staples in many Kenyan households and churches, earning her a respected place in the industry. Beyond the stage, she was known as a savvy businesswoman and a devoted mother of two.
Her passing leaves a significant void in Kenyan gospel music. As the community gathers to mourn, the focus remains on celebrating a life that, though cut short, was lived with passion and purpose, leaving behind a soundtrack of faith and resilience for her countless fans.
