Johana Ng’eno Helicopter Crash: Final Hours, Eyewitness Accounts and Full Investigation Details Revealed
A detailed account of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno’s last day reveals a packed schedule of public service before he perished alongside five others when helicopter registration 5Y-DSB crashed near Mosop Sub-County in Nandi County on the evening of Saturday, February 28, 2025.

Questions Arise Over Johana Ng’eno’s Final Moments Before Fatal Helicopter Crash
Questions are mounting over the final hours of the late Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon, following a closer examination of events leading up to a fatal helicopter crash that claimed his life and those of five other occupants on the evening of Saturday, February 28, 2025.
A reconstruction of the MP’s itinerary on the day of the tragedy paints the picture of a legislator deeply immersed in constituency work — from flood rescue operations at dawn to a cultural celebration hours before the crash.
Morning: Ng’eno Joins Mara River Flood Search and Rescue Mission
On the morning of Saturday, February 28, Ng’eno made a stop at the Mara River, where he participated hands-on in search and rescue operations for two individuals whose vehicle had been swept away by raging floodwaters days earlier.
The MP shared an update on social media documenting his involvement, and the post earned him widespread praise for his direct engagement in constituency matters. Journalist and close friend Stephen Letoo later recounted that he had planned to meet Ng’eno in Dikirr following morning meetings in Kilgoris, but upon switching on his phone, he discovered the lawmaker had already proceeded to the Mara River mission.
Afternoon: MP Celebrates Veteran Kalenjin Musician at Endebes Cultural Event
Later in the afternoon, Ng’eno travelled to Endebes in Trans-Nzoia County to attend a cultural celebration honouring veteran Kalenjin musician Kim Kim on the 35th anniversary of his music career.
In what would become one of his final public posts, the MP wrote on Facebook: “I have just arrived at Kapkugo, Tulwop Kony, Endebes, to join friends, fans, and fellow leaders in celebrating Artist Kim Kim’s remarkable 35th anniversary in the music industry.”
A video accompanying the post showed Ng’eno in song and dance, surrounded by attendees. Witnesses at the venue described a festive atmosphere and noted that the MP appeared in high spirits as he interacted with guests — unaware that tragedy was only hours away.
Helicopter 5Y-DSB: The Fatal Flight from Endebes Toward Nandi County
The exact time Ng’eno departed Endebes has not been confirmed. However, it is established that he subsequently boarded a helicopter, registration 5Y-DSB, together with five other occupants. The aircraft had been in use throughout the day to ferry the MP between his various engagements.
As the helicopter approached Mosop Sub-County in Nandi County, weather conditions reportedly deteriorated sharply. Mist and heavy rainfall drastically reduced visibility, creating hazardous flying conditions.
Eyewitnesses on the ground reported that the helicopter made an emergency landing near Chepkiep Forest in Mosop. The aircraft touched down safely during this initial stop, and the pilot was observed briefly speaking with local residents as he assessed weather conditions. After a short pause, and with conditions appearing to have marginally improved, the helicopter reportedly attempted a second takeoff.
The Crash: Helicopter Loses Stability and Bursts Into Flames on Second Takeoff
Provisional reports indicate the crash occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. Moments after the second takeoff, witnesses reported that the helicopter struggled to maintain stability before crashing near a forested area in the vicinity of Chepkiep Forest. The aircraft burst into flames upon impact.
All six occupants on board, including MP Ng’eno, perished in the crash.
Official Response: KCAA Launches Investigation, Ruto and Wetang’ula React
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that its Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) has launched a formal investigation into the crash to determine its cause.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula moved swiftly to establish a special team to support the family of the late MP with burial preparations, pending approval by the family.
President William Ruto took to social media to mourn Ng’eno, describing him as “a progressive and devoted servant of the people who worked tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Emurua Dikirr, Narok County.”
Who Was Johana Ng’eno? A Profile of the Emurua Dikirr Lawmaker
Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon served as the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County. Known for his outspoken political views and active engagement with his constituents, the lawmaker was widely recognised for his hands-on approach to public service — a trait evident in his activities on the very day he died.
His death marks a significant loss for the residents of Emurua Dikirr and the broader political community. Investigations into the crash remain ongoing.
