Is Your County Affected? Kenya Met’s Heavy Rainfall Warning for Multiple Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a significant weather advisory, forecasting heavy rainfall across multiple regions of the country from Tuesday, October 28, through Saturday, November 1. The alert warns of potential flooding and transportation disruptions in affected areas.

In a statement released Monday, the weather service indicated that several regions should prepare for substantial precipitation that may exceed 30mm in some areas, accompanied by thunderstorms in certain locations.

Regions Expected to Be Affected

The advisory specifically highlights four main regions that will experience the heaviest rainfall:

• The Highlands East of the Rift Valley: Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties
• The Southeast Lowlands: Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, and Tana River counties
• The Coast Region: Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu counties
• The Lake Victoria Basin: Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, and Kisii counties

Official Weather Warning

The Kenya Met Department stated: “Heavy rainfall of more than 30mm is expected over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coast. This may be accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas.”

Precautionary Measures Advised

Authorities have recommended several precautionary measures for residents in the affected regions:

• Avoid driving through or walking in moving water
• Relocate from flood-prone areas to higher ground
• Be vigilant about potential flash floods in urban areas
• Secure property in areas susceptible to water damage

Emergency Preparedness

County governments have been placed on high alert, with emergency services preparing for possible rescue operations. The Kenya Red Cross Society has activated its emergency response teams in anticipation of potential flooding incidents.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has directed county commissioners and local authorities to closely monitor the situation and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure public safety.
