Iran Assures Kenya It Will Not Be Targeted in Regional Conflict, Envoy Cites Missile Range Limits
Iranian Ambassador Ali Gholampour addresses concerns over US military presence, confirms Tehran’s missiles cannot reach Kenyan territory
NAIROBI, Kenya – Iran has moved to allay fears that Kenya could become a target in the escalating Middle East conflict, with its ambassador to Nairobi explicitly ruling out any attack on Kenyan soil despite the presence of US military installations in the region.
In a press briefing on Monday, Iranian Ambassador Dr Ali Gholampour sought to reassure Kenyans and the diplomatic community that the Islamic Republic harbours no hostile intentions towards the East African nation, even as Tehran conducts retaliatory strikes across the Gulf region following the killing of its Supreme Leader .
“Our missiles will not reach the Kenyan territory,” Gholampour stated emphatically, revealing that Iran has deliberately capped its missile range at 2,000 kilometres as a demonstration of what he termed the country’s peaceful and defensive posture .
Technical Limitations Provide Assurance
The ambassador described the range limitation as “good news” for Kenyans, confirming that Iran’s missile systems are technically incapable of reaching East Africa. “Our government has deliberately, in order to show its intention, a peaceful intention, limited the range of missiles only for defensive purposes,” he explained .
Beyond the technical constraints, Gholampour emphasised that Kenya does not host US military facilities of sufficient strategic importance to warrant retaliation from Tehran. “This country does not provide a US military facility with the capability to attack Iran,” he noted, addressing concerns that American bases in the region could become flashpoints .
While Iran considers US military installations used to launch attacks against it as American territory, the ambassador expressed confidence that Nairobi would not permit its land to be used for offensive operations against Tehran. “I do not believe that Kenya will provide such a facility to attack Iran from its land,” Gholampour said, adding that Iran deeply values its long-standing historical and diplomatic ties with Kenya .
Regional Conflict Intensifies
The ambassador’s assurances come amid a dramatic escalation of hostilities following coordinated military action by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday. The strikes resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several top government and military officials .
In a visibly emotional address, Gholampour confirmed the Supreme Leader’s death, describing the attacks as “a flagrant violation of international peace and stability” . “I must inform you with a heavy heart and with tears that I cannot hide that our beloved leader, the guiding light of our revolution and the guardian of our unity, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, peace upon him, has been martyred,” he said .
In retaliation, Iran has launched missile and drone strikes targeting what it describes as US and Israeli interests across eight countries in the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain .
Kenya Calls for De-escalation
President William Ruto has condemned the missile strikes targeting Gulf nations, warning that the regionalisation of the conflict poses a grave threat to international peace and security. In a statement, Ruto called for urgent multi-stakeholder engagement towards de-escalation .
“At this defining and perilous moment in global history, longstanding multilateral institutions remain indispensable frameworks for the resolution of the current crisis in the Middle East,” Ruto said, urging all parties to pursue diplomatic solutions .
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has issued a travel and safety advisory to Kenyan citizens living in or transiting through the Middle East, urging them to exercise extreme caution and register with Kenyan diplomatic missions in the region .
Economic Implications and Citizen Welfare
Beyond security assurances, Gholampour acknowledged that prolonged conflict could have economic repercussions globally, including in Kenya. He noted that all-out war often disrupts trade routes and commercial transportation corridors, affecting countries far from the battlefield .
The ambassador confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic global oil transit route, remains open despite tensions, emphasising that Tehran has shown restraint and does not intend to interrupt the flow of essential commodities, including energy supplies destined for Africa .
Regarding Kenyan nationals in Iran, Gholampour said only a small number of Kenyans are currently in the country. He assured that Iranian authorities, working with foreign embassies and the foreign affairs ministry, are facilitating safe exit arrangements for foreigners wishing to leave through designated corridors .
Meanwhile, Kenya Airways has suspended flights to Dubai and Sharjah until further notice following the closure of several regional airspaces . The national carrier has advised passengers to regularly check for updates through official channels.
The United Nations Security Council has held an emergency meeting over the fighting, with UN chief Antonio Guterres warning that military action in the Middle East “carries the risk of igniting a chain of events that no one can control
