The project, made possible through a Sh50 million partnership with the M-PESA Foundation, will see the hospital’s maternity capacity nearly triple from the current 17 beds to 50 beds, addressing the critical shortage of delivery facilities in the densely populated Likoni sub-county.
Speaking at the ceremony attended by county leaders and residents, the Governor expressed gratitude to Safaricom for the substantial investment, which includes Sh37 million for construction and Sh13 million for medical equipment.
“Today, Safaricom has chipped in in a big way,” the Governor said, noting that the telecommunications giant is also supporting the construction of a home for the elderly in Mombasa.
Comprehensive Healthcare Expansion
The Governor announced plans for an additional hospital facility in Likoni, which will feature a fully equipped theatre and an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) wing to provide specialized care for residents who currently must travel to other parts of Mombasa for such services.
The expansion comes as healthcare demand in Likoni continues to grow, with the existing maternity ward often operating beyond capacity.
Addressing Drug Abuse Crisis
During his address, the Governor also acknowledged the rising problem of drug abuse in Likoni, stating that the Shonda rehabilitation center has been established to provide support and treatment for affected individuals.
The event proceeded despite minor disruptions, with several Mombasa leaders addressing supporters gathered for the historic occasion.
The new maternity wing is expected to significantly reduce maternal mortality rates and improve healthcare outcomes for mothers and newborns in the region. Construction timelines were not immediately disclosed.
