Digital Storyteller to Industry Steward: Ommy Dallah’s Remarkable Evolution
Over a decade ago, when blogging was still finding its footing in Kenya’s coastal region, one voice emerged with clarity and purpose. Omar Abdallah, widely recognized by his pen name Ommy Dallah, began documenting the pulse of Coast society through his digital platform, OmmyDalla.co.ke — a space where governance, social concerns, and untold human stories found expression.

His work did not go unnoticed. In 2012, Dallah received the Blogger of the Year Award at the Pwani Golden Awards, a recognition that validated his approach to journalism at a time when digital media was still viewed with skepticism by traditional newsrooms. The accolade marked a turning point, establishing him as a credible force in regional storytelling.

But Dallah’s ambitions extended beyond the confines of a blog. His career trajectory took him into conventional journalism, where he served as a correspondent for the Sunday Express Newspaper. His talents later carried him across borders to Kiss FM Tanzania, where he honed his skills as a radio presenter. These experiences were complemented by roles in communications and consultancy, broadening his understanding of public engagement and strategic messaging.
Today, Dallah occupies a different seat—one of responsibility and influence. As Chairman of the Mombasa Press Club, he has redirected his energy toward collective progress within the journalism fraternity. His leadership has transformed the club into more than a professional association; it has become a hub for mentorship, skills development, and vocal advocacy for press freedom.
Under his stewardship, the organization has prioritized journalist welfare and working conditions, recognizing that a strong media landscape depends on empowered storytellers. His vision centers on building bridges between seasoned practitioners and emerging voices, ensuring the sustainability of quality journalism in the region.
Dallah’s trajectory—from solo blogger to institutional leader—illustrates how individual passion, when sustained with integrity and vision, can reshape entire professional communities. His story is a testament to the evolving nature of media in Kenya, where digital innovation and traditional values increasingly converge.
