Speaking during a high-level ODM meeting in Mombasa on Saturday, Sifuna addressed party faithful with a resolute message of loyalty and readiness. “I will never betray the ODM party and what it stands for,” the senator stated emphatically.
Sifuna reminded party members of instructions from party leader Raila Odinga to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. “We can all agree that Baba said we should make our party strong so that we can get a presidential candidate come 2027,” he said.
In a bold declaration that drew applause from the crowd, Sifuna expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects regardless of who emerges as the flag bearer. “If we decide that Oburu Odinga is our candidate for presidency, he will win. And if you give me the chance to become the candidate, I will send Ruto home very early in the morning,” Sifuna declared.
The senator, who played a key role in negotiating ODM’s current government arrangement, clarified the party’s political status. “I wrote the agreement and the MOU between ODM and UDA does not constitute a coalition. We must keep our identity as ODM,” he emphasized.
Sifuna warned against confusion surrounding the party’s participation in the broad-based government. “Broad-based is not a party and it shall not have a candidate. We should make sure our party stands strong,” he said, urging leaders not to mislead voters.
“Leaders should not bring confusion to our voters. Our voters know our emblems and party colours,” Sifuna stressed, calling for clarity in political messaging.
Looking to immediate electoral tests, the senator challenged the party to demonstrate its strength in upcoming by-elections. “We should make sure the by-elections that will take place, the ODM party should win,” he said.
On the 2027 elections, Sifuna called for the party to provide clear direction when the time comes. “In 2027, the party should make sure it gives a direction,” he stated, while praising ODM’s democratic credentials.
“ODM is a democratic party and the coastal people chose ODM because it stood for the people,” Sifuna noted, acknowledging the region’s loyalty to the party.
In a somber moment, Sifuna addressed troubling developments in neighboring Tanzania, expressing concern over the abduction of an individual identified as Heche. “What is happening in Tanzania is saddening,” Sifuna said, referencing reports that Heche was abducted and remains missing after allegedly attempting to visit Raila Odinga’s burial site. His whereabouts remain unknown.
The Mombasa meeting comes as ODM navigates its role in government while positioning itself for the next electoral cycle, with Senator Sifuna emerging as one of the party’s most vocal potential presidential contenders.
