Prominent journalist Larry Madowo was notably absent from Tanzania this week to cover the country’s general election, where incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan was widely expected to secure a new term.

Madowo’s absence prompted questions from viewers, leading the journalist to publicly clarify his reporting position. He explained that he had made an editorial decision to cover the election story from a location outside of Tanzania.
In his explanation, Madowo extended the focus to the working environment for media within the country. He pointed out that even local Tanzanian journalists face significant obstacles when reporting on politically sensitive events, underscoring the broader challenges of comprehensive election coverage in the region.
The context for these challenges remains acute, as demonstrations are still ongoing in parts of Tanzania following the announcement of preliminary election results. The protests and the media’s ability to report on them freely have brought renewed scrutiny to the state of press freedom during a critical democratic process.
