Mombasa Launches Youth-Driven Waste Management Programme
Mombasa County has officially launched a youth-centered waste management initiative aimed at addressing growing environmental challenges while creating employment opportunities for young people.

Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir announced the programme, describing it as “a new chapter” in how the coastal city manages its environment and future.

Programme Overview
The initiative, spearheaded by the County Government’s Department of Environment and Water, will deploy a dedicated environmental workforce of young people to handle critical sanitation services across the city.
The youth teams will be responsible for:
- Daily waste collection across communities
Routine clean-up operations in residential and commercial areas
Monthly fumigation and environmental hygiene activities
Responding to Public Demand
Governor Nassir said the programme was developed in response to public outcry over mounting waste challenges and increasing demand for reliable collection services in Mombasa.
“By placing our youth at the centre of this effort, we are not only keeping Mombasa clean, green, and healthy, but also creating jobs, nurturing responsibility, and building a culture of community pride,” the governor stated.
Aligned with Development Goals
The waste management initiative is firmly anchored in the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2023–2027, which outlines Mombasa’s five-year development vision, as well as the Annual Development Plan (ADP).
Waste management has been identified as a core priority in these strategic documents, reflecting the county’s commitment to delivering sustainable urban services and safeguarding public health for all residents.
Call for Public Participation
Governor Nassir appealed to Mombasa residents to support the initiative and play their part in maintaining cleanliness.
“This is a new chapter for Mombasa. Together, we will restore the beauty of our city, protect our environment, and empower our young people to be the driving force of change,” he said.
The governor emphasized that collective effort is essential for achieving “a cleaner, greener, and more dignified Mombasa.”
The launch of the programme represents a significant step in Mombasa’s efforts to address environmental sustainability while tackling youth unemployment through green jobs.
