The Council of Governors (COG) has convened an emergency plenary session following deeply controversial statements made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga concerning the recent passing of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The controversy stems from a public address delivered by Governor Kahiga on Tuesday, in which he appeared to celebrate the death of the ODM leader.

Speaking in Kikuyu, Kahiga asserted that Odinga’s passing would “free” the national government, suggesting it would correct a perceived imbalance in resource allocation.
He specifically referenced the recent political détente, often referred to as a “handshake,” claiming it led the government to concentrate all development resources in the Nyanza region while neglecting other parts of the country.
His comments escalated when he invoked divine intervention, stating, “You can see what had been planned, but God brought something up… We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us.”
The remarks have provoked a swift and severe backlash from across the political spectrum and the general public, being widely condemned as inflammatory, reckless, and a threat to national cohesion.

In response to the growing outcry, the COG, under the leadership of its Chair Ahmed Abdullahi, has taken decisive action. The council has publicly labeled Kahiga’s comments as “insensitive and reckless” and announced the urgent meeting to formally address the breach of ethical conduct.
A conclusive statement detailing the council’s official position and any potential disciplinary measures is anticipated upon the meeting’s conclusion.
The nation now watches closely as the body representing Kenya’s county leadership navigates this significant test of its authority and commitment to dignified public discourse.
