Ruto Orders Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo Estate Renamed After Late MP Johana Ng’eno

President directs Ministry of Housing to rebrand one of the capital’s oldest estates in honour of the Emurua Dikirr lawmaker’s role in the affordable housing initiative

NAIROBI — President William Ruto has directed that one of Nairobi’s oldest and most iconic residential estates, Shauri Moyo, be renamed in honour of the late Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno, who died recently and was laid to rest on Friday.

Speaking at Ng’eno’s burial ceremony on March 6, 2026, Ruto announced that the estate will be rebranded the Johana Ng’eno Boma Yangu Estate — a tribute to the late lawmaker’s instrumental role in championing the government’s affordable housing programme.

“Because Johana Ng’eno was the chairman who ensured that we succeeded in the housing project, we have recommended that one of the biggest estates in Nairobi, called Shauri Moyo, be named after Johana Ng’eno Boma Yangu Estate,” Ruto announced before mourners.

Ministry of Housing Directed to Act Immediately

The President did not stop at a symbolic gesture. Ruto issued a direct order to the Lands and Housing Ministry, led by Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, to immediately initiate the formal renaming process.

“I am directing the Ministry of Housing to rename Shauri Moyo to Johana Ng’eno Estate in the city of Nairobi,” he stated.

The directive places the renaming firmly on the government’s official agenda, with CS Wahome now tasked with overseeing the administrative and legal processes required to effect the change.

A Legacy Tied to Affordable Housing

If implemented, the renaming would cement Ng’eno’s legacy as one of the key political architects behind the Ruto administration’s Boma Yangu affordable housing initiative — a flagship programme aimed at expanding access to decent, low-cost homes for ordinary Kenyans.

Shauri Moyo, located in Nairobi’s Starehe constituency, is one of the city’s earliest planned residential estates, built during the colonial era and long considered a cornerstone of Nairobi’s urban housing history. Its proposed renaming marks a significant symbolic shift, connecting a piece of the capital’s old infrastructure to the government’s modern housing agenda.

The announcement drew the renaming process into the public spotlight at a moment of mourning, with Ruto framing it as both a personal tribute and a statement of national appreciation for Ng’eno’s public service.
