Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani Launches Youth Empowerment Initiative Through Sports Development
By Feddy Madebe
Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani emphasized the transformative power of sports and talent development during a youth empowerment program held at Ndohivyo Primary School Grounds in Samburu Chengoni Ward on January 31, 2026.

The event, organized in support of Samburu Lions Football Club, brought together energetic young athletes and community members in Samburu Sub-County, highlighting the county government’s commitment to creating opportunities for youth through sports and entrepreneurship.
Sports as Economic Empowerment Tool
Governor Achani outlined her administration’s vision for leveraging sports as a catalyst for economic transformation, emphasizing that athletic programs extend far beyond talent development.
“Sports create jobs, promote entrepreneurship, instill discipline, and strengthen social cohesion within our communities,” the governor stated during the engagement with local youth teams.

The county chief executive acknowledged President William Ruto’s support in completing the Kwale Stadium, describing the facility as a game-changer for young athletes in the region. The modern sports complex now provides youth with professional training grounds and competitive venues to showcase their talents.
Business Registration Initiative for Sports Clubs
In a strategic move to unlock funding opportunities, Governor Achani urged football teams and youth organizations to formalize their operations by registering as companies. This registration enables clubs to access government contracts and private sector partnerships.
The initiative has already yielded results, with teams including Wayzata FC and Kwale United FC benefiting from county empowerment programs. The model provides a sustainable framework for sports clubs to generate revenue beyond traditional sponsorships.

Over 400 Companies Registered Under Empowerment Program
Kwale County has registered more than 400 companies owned by women, youth, and persons living with disabilities as part of its inclusive economic development strategy. Over 300 of these registered entities have already secured county tenders, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness.
The county government recently operationalized the Biashara Revolving Fund Act, 2025, which provides affordable financing to organized groups and registered companies that have won government contracts. This financial mechanism addresses the capital constraints often faced by youth-led enterprises when fulfilling tender obligations.
High-Level County Leadership Participation
Deputy Governor Josphat Chirema Kombo joined Governor Achani at the event, alongside several Members of the County Assembly including John Shede (Samburu Chengoni), Victor Safari Nyanje (Kasemeni), and Yusuf Sengeza (Mkongani).

County Executive Committee Members Francisca Kilonzo (Social Services) and Ali Joto (Roads) also attended, along with various directors and officials from both county and national government levels, underscoring the administration’s unified approach to youth development.
Building Sustainable Youth Opportunities
The empowerment program represents Kwale County’s broader strategy to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for young people through structured sports development, business formalization, and access to financing.
By combining athletic talent development with entrepreneurship training and financial support mechanisms, the county aims to transform sports clubs into viable business entities that contribute to local economic growth while providing meaningful employment for youth.
The initiative aligns with national efforts to harness Kenya’s demographic dividend by investing in youth-focused programs that build skills, create jobs, and promote self-reliance among young Kenyans.
