BREAKING: Tyla Defeats Burna Boy and Davido to Win Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance

The 68th Annual Grammy Awards celebrated global musical diversity on Sunday, with African and African diaspora artists claiming significant victories at the Crypto.com Arena.

South African sensation Tyla continued her meteoric rise on the international stage, securing the Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her track “Push 2 Start.” The win adds another accolade to the 22-year-old artist’s growing collection of honors and underscores her role in bringing African music to mainstream global audiences.

The Best African Music Performance category, established to spotlight contemporary African sounds at the recording industry’s most prestigious event, featured a competitive field including Nigerian superstars Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Starr, as well as Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo.

In a breakthrough moment for country music, Shaboozey — a US-born artist of Nigerian heritage — claimed the Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance. His victory over established names including Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers signals the genre’s ongoing evolution and increasing diversity.

The evening’s major awards saw Billie Eilish take home Song of the Year for “Wildflower,” while Tyler, the Creator won Album of the Year for “Chromakopia.” Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s collaboration “Luther” earned Record of the Year honors.

In the pop categories, British newcomer Lola Young won Best Pop Solo Performance for “Messy,” while Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s “Defying Gravity” from the film adaptation of the musical Wicked claimed Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

The Best New Artist award went to British singer-songwriter Olivia Dean, who prevailed over a diverse field of emerging talent including girl group Katseye and social media star Addison Rae.

Tyla’s Grammy win cements her position as one of Africa’s most successful musical exports, following her earlier breakthrough with the global hit “Water,” which introduced her distinctive Amapiano sound to international markets.
