Nairobi, Kiambu Among Counties to Receive Rain Over Next 5 Days – Kenya Met

Residents across Nairobi and several central highland counties should prepare for unseasonably cold weather and sporadic rainfall over the next five days, the Kenya Meteorological Department announced in its weekly forecast released Saturday.

The meteorological agency has indicated that minimum temperatures in Nairobi and surrounding highland regions could plummet to as low as 5 degrees Celsius during the forecast period, accompanied by scattered afternoon showers expected to begin after January 24.

Nairobi Weather Outlook

According to the forecast, the capital city will experience sunny intervals during morning hours, with cloud cover developing progressively throughout the day. This atmospheric pattern increases the likelihood of light precipitation in certain areas of the metropolis.

Evening conditions are projected to remain partly cloudy, creating circumstances conducive to chilly nights—a departure from typical January weather patterns in Nairobi. The combination of cool temperatures and intermittent rainfall represents unusual climatic conditions for this time of year.

Regional Weather Patterns

Kiambu County, which borders Nairobi, faces a similar meteorological outlook. Residents should anticipate cool morning temperatures, intermittent afternoon precipitation, and notably cold nighttime conditions.

The weather advisory extends to additional central highland counties, including Nyandarua, Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi. These areas are forecast to record low overnight temperatures alongside periodic afternoon showers.

Meteorological officials attribute the highland precipitation to atmospheric systems traversing regions east of the Rift Valley. However, authorities emphasize that rainfall is expected to remain localized rather than widespread across the affected counties.

Relief for Agricultural Regions

The forecast brings potentially positive developments for farmers in Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the Rift Valley. These areas are expected to experience a gradual increase in precipitation beginning Monday, with showers extending into evening hours by midweek.

This anticipated rainfall could provide much-needed moisture for agricultural activities in these productive farming regions.

Contrasting Conditions in Arid Zones

Northern and northeastern counties present a markedly different weather picture. Residents in Turkana, Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, and Garissa have been advised to prepare for hot and dry conditions, with daytime temperatures reaching approximately 38 degrees Celsius.

The stark temperature differential between highland and northern regions illustrates Kenya’s diverse climatic zones, with some areas experiencing near-freezing conditions while others endure extreme heat simultaneously.

Coastal Weather Forecast

Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu are projected to maintain sunny and warm conditions. Temperatures in these areas are expected to reach highs near 34 degrees Celsius, with minimal probability of precipitation.

Wind Advisory

The meteorological department has issued an advisory regarding strong winds across multiple regions. Northeasterly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots are anticipated over northwestern, northeastern, and coastal areas.

These wind conditions could impact marine operations and potentially affect lightweight structures in the affected regions. Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to exercise caution during outdoor activities.

Public Advisory

Meteorological officials have recommended that residents, particularly those in highland regions, monitor daily weather updates closely. The department notes that conditions can shift rapidly, and isolated showers may occur even during periods of generally fair weather.

The current weather pattern underscores the importance of preparedness, with residents advised to have appropriate clothing for cold conditions and to plan outdoor activities with consideration for potential afternoon precipitation.

The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor atmospheric conditions and will provide updated forecasts as weather systems evolve across the country.
