The seasoned politician made the announcement on Monday, confirming his departure takes effect immediately following his public declaration of presidential ambitions earlier in the day.

“Following my declaration earlier today that I intend to run for Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the year 2027, my position as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency is no longer tenable. I have therefore resigned from the position with immediate effect,” Owalo stated in a social media post.

Government Role and Responsibilities

In his capacity as Deputy Chief of Staff, Owalo was entrusted with coordinating government delivery mechanisms and overseeing efficiency improvements across multiple state departments. President Ruto had appointed him to the position to streamline public service operations and enhance the implementation of government programs.

Political Background

Owalo brings extensive political experience to his presidential campaign. He previously served as Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, where he oversaw Kenya’s digital transformation initiatives and telecommunications policy.

The politician has participated in previous electoral contests, demonstrating his long-standing involvement in Kenyan politics. His resignation marks a significant development in the country’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.

The move sets the stage for what is expected to be a competitive presidential race, with Owalo becoming one of the early contenders to formally declare their intention to challenge the incumbent administration.

President Ruto’s office has not yet issued a statement regarding the resignation or announced plans for appointing a replacement to the Deputy Chief of Staff position.
