Multiple People Trapped After Another Construction Site Collapses in Karen
Nairobi, January 10, 2026 — A structure under construction has collapsed along Ngong Road in the Karen area, leaving numerous individuals trapped beneath the debris, according to emergency responders on the scene.

The incident occurred Saturday evening near Karen Community Church, prompting immediate deployment of rescue teams. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that emergency personnel have successfully extracted three individuals from the wreckage as of early reports.
However, the exact number of people still buried in the rubble remains unclear, with rescue operations continuing into the night.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko took to social media to alert residents about the disaster, stating that the collapse happened close to a KCB branch in the area. He claimed that recovery teams had already retrieved three bodies, though these figures have not been independently confirmed by official sources.
Pattern of Structural Failures
This latest incident marks the second major building collapse in Nairobi within a two-week period. In late December, a twelve-floor residential building in South C estate crumbled, claiming two lives and raising fresh questions about construction safety standards in the capital.
The frequency of such disasters has drawn sharp criticism from industry professionals. The Architectural Association of Kenya recently issued warnings about widespread structural deficiencies across the city’s buildings, pointing to inadequate regulatory oversight and enforcement failures.
Data from the National Building Inspectorate paints a troubling picture. Professional assessments revealed that approximately 85 percent of inspected structures either failed safety standards, required substantial repairs, or presented serious hazards to residents.
Experts attribute the crisis to multiple factors: corruption within approval processes, insufficient monitoring of construction sites, and widespread use of inferior building materials that compromise structural integrity.
Official Response Awaited
As of publication time, neither the Nairobi County government nor the National Disaster Management Unit had issued official statements regarding the Karen incident or provided updated casualty figures.
Emergency services remain at the site, working against darkness to locate and extract anyone still trapped. The full scale of the tragedy is expected to become clearer as rescue operations progress through the night.
The recurring nature of these collapses has intensified calls for comprehensive reforms to Kenya’s building approval and inspection systems, with advocates demanding immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
