Governor Nassir Mourns ‘Force of Nature’ Cyrus Jirongo
By Feddy Madebe
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has paid an emotional tribute to former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as a fearless political operator and generous mentor whose authenticity left an indelible mark on Kenya’s political landscape.

In a statement released following Jirongo’s death in a road accident early Saturday morning, Governor Nassir reflected on both the personal friendship and professional admiration he held for the veteran politician.
“Cyrus was a force of nature: fearless, driven, and unapologetically authentic,” Nassir wrote, capturing the essence of a man who spent over three decades in Kenyan politics and business.
A Man Who Lived on His Own Terms
The Mombasa county chief praised Jirongo’s multifaceted talents, highlighting his sharp political acumen and business savvy. According to Nassir, Jirongo approached life with uncommon boldness, refusing to be constrained by conventional thinking or difficult circumstances.
“He was forthright yet warm, daring yet deeply human, and his entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his courage to take bold positions,” the governor noted, painting a portrait of a complex figure who balanced directness with compassion.
Nassir particularly emphasized Jirongo’s willingness to take unpopular stands and pursue ambitious ideas, traits that defined his political career from his early days as a KANU operative through his multiple bids for elective office, including a presidential run in 2017.
A Legacy of Generosity
Beyond political accomplishments, Governor Nassir stressed that Jirongo’s most distinctive quality was his generosity. The former MP was known for freely giving his time, resources, and unwavering support to those around him.
“He gave freely, of his time, his resources, and his belief in others, always ready to uplift, mentor, and open doors,” Nassir observed, suggesting that Jirongo’s influence extended far beyond legislative chambers into the lives of individuals he helped along the way.
This mentorship role and willingness to support emerging leaders earned Jirongo respect across political divides, even as his own electoral fortunes waned in recent years.
Condolences to Family
The governor extended his sympathies to Jirongo’s family, friends, and political associates, acknowledging the profound loss they face.
“May they draw strength from his legacy and the many lives he impacted,” Nassir said, encouraging those mourning to find solace in the breadth of Jirongo’s influence and the lasting contributions he made to Kenya’s political development.
The tribute from Governor Nassir joins a growing chorus of condolences from leaders across the country, including Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka and COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, all recognizing Jirongo’s unique place in modern Kenyan political history.
Jirongo, 64, died when his vehicle collided with a passenger bus on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Naivasha in the early hours of Saturday morning. He had been driving home to Lugari following political engagements in Nairobi.
