Gachagua to Sifuna and Babu: Join My Party, Let’s Take On Ruto

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made a bold political move by publicly inviting two prominent Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislators to join his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), signaling an aggressive push to build coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In remarks that have sent ripples through Kenya’s political landscape, Gachagua extended an olive branch to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, describing Sifuna as a formidable leader well-positioned for the 2027 senatorial contest.

“Kura ya Ruto hapa Nairobi ni 24,000 and iko kona moja hapa Lang’ata,” Gachagua stated, underscoring what he characterized as President William Ruto’s narrow support base in the capital, which he claimed is concentrated primarily in the Lang’ata constituency.

The outreach comes as Gachagua works to establish DCP as a viable political force following his impeachment in October 2024, which marked the dramatic collapse of his relationship with President Ruto. The former deputy president has since embarked on a mission to rebuild his political fortunes, with DCP forming a strategic alliance with Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement.

Gachagua’s overture to opposition figures represents a significant shift in Kenya’s political dynamics, as traditional party lines continue to blur ahead of the next election cycle. His pointed remarks about the president’s support in Nairobi suggest DCP is eyeing the capital as crucial battleground territory in what could be Gachagua’s anticipated bid for State House in 2027.
