The incident occurred as Governor Natembeya was backing MCA aspirant Erick Wekesa at a political rally when assailants disrupted the gathering with stones and what witnesses described as possible gunfire.
Multiple vehicles in the governor’s convoy suffered shattered windshields, and several attendees sustained injuries in the chaos that ensued. The violence extended beyond the rally site, with reports indicating that Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga’s nearby home was also vandalized during the incident.
Natembeya Points Finger at Wetangula
In a strongly worded statement following the attack, Governor Natembeya directly blamed National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula for orchestrating the violence, claiming the assault originated from near the Speaker’s residence.
“This attack came from the direction of Speaker Wetangula’s home. It is a clear attempt to intimidate political rivals ahead of the upcoming by-elections,” Natembeya alleged.
The governor’s party issued a statement condemning what it termed as “naked political violence” and called on police to take immediate action against those responsible.
Calls for Police Investigation
Party officials have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, expressing concern that such violence could set a dangerous precedent as the region prepares for by-elections.
“We cannot allow political competition to descend into violence and intimidation. The police must act swiftly to identify and prosecute those behind this cowardly attack,” a party spokesperson said.
The incident comes amid rising political tensions in Western Kenya, where various political formations are positioning themselves for upcoming electoral contests. The region has witnessed increased political activity and rivalry between different camps in recent months.
No Official Response Yet
As of press time, Speaker Moses Wetangula had not responded to Governor Natembeya’s allegations. Police authorities confirmed they are investigating the incident but declined to provide further details.
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation from political leaders across the region, with many calling for peaceful political engagement and respect for democratic processes.
Injured attendees are reportedly receiving treatment at local health facilities, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear.
