Security or Scam? Mixed Reactions Greet Boniface Mwangi’s Campaign Donation Plea

NAIROBI, Kenya – Prominent activist and 2027 presidential aspirant Boniface Mwangi has launched a public fundraising appeal, citing urgent security concerns that he claims necessitate a full security and media team for his campaign movements.

In a post on the social media platform X, Mwangi stated that the current environment in Kenya has made it unsafe for him to campaign with minimal staff.

“If Kenya were safe, I would move with just one driver,” Mwangi wrote. “But because of hired goons, rampant crime, and state-sponsored violence, I am forced to travel with a full security and media team.”

He directly appealed to his supporters for financial contributions, framing the donations as essential for his personal safety. “Please contribute to my campaign today — your support literally helps keep me alive while I continue meeting the people. Every shilling counts,” the post concluded.

The appeal has sparked a fierce and divided debate online, highlighting the contentious nature of public-funded political campaigns.

Allegations of Fraud and “Commercial Activism”

A significant portion of the response has been critical, with many commentators accusing Mwangi of exploiting his supporters for financial gain. Some users drew parallels to other activists, like Morara, who have previously fundraised for causes that later stalled.

“This is actually fraud!” wrote one user. “They’ve gone from soliciting donors for maandamano dollars to milking Kenyans in the name of running for the Presidency… Kenyans SHOULD STAY AWAY from commercial activists! They are a cancer!”

Other critics questioned his political strategy, suggesting he is not a viable presidential candidate. “Hey man, you know, I know, we know that you can’t make it,” advised one commenter. “It would be wise to start at the MP or MCA level… otherwise you are simply conning us.”

Another user labeled such activists as tools for foreign interests, warning, “Say NO to commercial activists being paid to divide the youth vote!!”

A Base of Support and Confirmed Donations

Despite the criticism, the fundraiser also revealed a base of dedicated supporters who view Mwangi as a beacon of change. Several users confirmed making small donations, with one sharing a transaction confirmation for Ksh50.00.

“We will contribute. These are the types of candidates we need,” wrote one supporter, accusing government sympathizers of trying to derail Mwangi’s campaign. “Don’t tire, don’t waver, go for it. We want change. We want people like you. Bravo!”

Another supporter agreed to contribute but attached a condition, stating, “Promise my community one thing, no evictions without govt relocation if and when elected president.”

The mixed public reaction underscores the challenges facing activist-politicians like Boniface Mwangi as they navigate the transition from social commentary to electoral politics, where traditional campaign tactics and fundraising methods are often viewed with deep public skepticism.
